Composites Materials in Construction

Advantages provided by composite materials are rapidly increasing day by day. Besides this raise, the usage sectors are also diversifying. Composite materials have appeared in several different sectors for years and the construction industry one of the main application areas for composite materials.

High Strength

One of the main benefits of composite parts is that composites can easily provide high strength and low weight at the same time. Therefore, usage of the composite materials over structural parts can be effective for cost and material saving. Because it offers much less material to be used to get the same mechanical properties for some applications.

Corrosion Resistant

Composites, unlike metal alloys, do not rust or corrode. These materials are suitable for corrosive conditions. Also, composites are water-resistant; they do not swell like wood or spalls like brick and concrete. This gives the construction industry a beneficial alternative for the different structural parts. Composites increase the lifetime of the structures.

Thermal and electrical insulation are critical in some areas of construction and composites are naturally good electrical insulators. Since they have limited thermal conductivity, they do not expand in response to temperature variations. However, composite materials can adapt the conditions to provide required isolation for some applications with such properties that can be added to the composition.

Common Applications

Composite materials are attractive for the architectural industry, they are used in roofing, domes in architecture. In addition, because of their benefits with insulation, high strength, and non-corrosive behaviour, they are used many applications such as bridges, towers, masts, housing.
